Planeta Mars
Mars je poslední z planet zemského typu. A také je druhá nejmenší planeta Sluneční soustavy. Mars dostal své jméno, podle rudého zbarvení, které bylo symbolem války, ohně a krve. A Mars byl starořímský bůh války. Mars lze za příhodných podmínek pozorovat celou noc a má načervenalou barvu.
Atmosféra Marsu je velmi řídká. Tlak na povrchu je mezi 600 až 1000 Pa. To je přibližně 100 až 150krát méně než na Zemi. Největší podíl má oxid uhličitý (95 %), dále dusík (2,7 %), argon (1,6 %), kyslík (0,15 %).
Průměrná teplota u povrchu planety je okolo ?56 °C. Pro Mars jsou typické velké rozdíly mezi dnem a nocí. Na rovníku se teploty pohybují od ?90 do ?10 °C, a nad nulu se prakticky nedostanou. Naproti tomu teplota povrchové vrstvy půdy může někdy dosáhnou až 30 °C.
Povrch Marsu je velmi různorodý. Jižní polokoule s hornatou krajinou je pokryta krátery. Na severní polokouli jsou obrovské rovné pláně zalité lávou. Na Marsu je nejvyšší hora Sluneční soustavy - sopka Olympus Mons, která vystupuje do výšky 27 km nad okolní terén. V rovníkové oblasti Marsu se nachází obrovský kaňon Valles Marineris. Je dlouhý 4 500 km a hluboký 7 km.
Kůra Marsu je silná od 32 do 80 km. Ale přesné složení není známo.
Plášť je silný okolo 1 500 až 2 000 km, je složen z křemičitých hornin.
Jádro má rozměry mezi 1250km a 2000 km. Ani jeho složení zatím není přesně známo. Pravděpodobně je železné a tuhé, jinak by vytvářelo magnetismus, který ovšem nebyl zaznamenán.
Mars má dva měsíce Deimos a Phobos. Oba ukazují Marsu stále stejnou část. Phobos obíhá planetu rychleji než se ona sama otáčí, což způsobuje zpomalování oběhu a snižování vzdálenosti. Odhaduje se, že za 50 000 let Phobos do planety narazí. Naproti tomu oběžná dráha Deimosu se prodlužuje. Oba tyto měsíce jsou pravděpodobně zachycenými planetkami.
Protože se lidé domnívali(a stále domnívají), že na Marsu může být život, je Mars častým cílem sond a dokonce se plánuje přistání člověka na Marsu.
První pokusy o přistání na Marsu podniklo 7 sovětských sond. Ty se ovšem ani nedostaly k cíli. Úspěšnější byly americké sondy Mariner 3 a 4. Ty na Zem poslaly celkem 22 snímků. Mariner 6 a 7 prolétly okolo, a na Zem poslaly 400 snímků a zkoumaly složení atmosféry. Dalším úspěšným projektem byl program Viking. Jednalo se o 2 sondy, které prozkoumaly povrch s rozlišením na 100km a odeslali 55 000 snímků.
Poté se program objevování Marsu na delší dobu přerušil. Ovšem v poslední době se zase vesmírné programy začaly o Mars se střídavými úspěchy zajímat. Mezi úspěchy se určitě řadí přistání 2 amerických sond Spirit a Opportunity.
